Watchet is a harbour town in Somerset, England on the edge of Exmoor.

Watchet is a station on the West Somerset Railway and is the place were St Decuman was killed.

In Samuel Taylor Coleridge’s poem, the ancient mariner set sail from watchet.

C’est aussi l’endroit où fût décapité St Decuman.
Watchet est aussi devenue célèbre par le poëte Samuel Coleridge. Une statue de l’Ancient Mariner” est, d’ailleurs, érigée sur la marina de Watchet.

     Après sa reconstructioin et son agrandissement en 1861, le port de Watchet devint le plus sûr des petits ports de la région. Endommagé par une tempête en 1901, son brise lames ouest fut reconstruit en 1904. La station de sauvetage fut érigée en 1875.

     Watchet harbour is tidal. When it was rebuilt in 1861 it became the best of the small ports along the Bristol Channel. Hit with a gale in 1901, 390 feet of the breakwater was reconstructed in 1904. The life boat station was established in 1875.

       Dans les temps passés, Watchet a prospéré grâce ,notamment, à l’exportation du minerai de fer des Brendon hills par le chemin de fer créé en 1858. Ce dernier était ensuite acheminé par bateau vers le pays de Galles tout proche jusqu’à ce qu’il fut remplacé par des exportations bon marché venant d’Espagne.
     Cette ligne de chemin de fer fut lancée à Taunton en 1859, arriva à Watchet trois ans plus tard, et fut intégrée au reseau régional en 1921.

     The notable late-Victorian export was iron ore from mines on the Brendon hills, by the West Somerset Railway which was built in 1858. Until production was undermined by imports from Spain, it was shipped from Watchet to the foundries in South Wales.

    West Somerset Railway began near Taunton in 1859 and it arrived at Watchet in 1862. Incorporation into the Great Western Railway took place in 1921

     Au siècle dernier, elle ne dut sa survie qu’à l’expansion du camping et le transport de mobile homes sur les côtes de cette riviera anglaise. Pour des raisons de rentabilité, la ligne fut fermée en 1971, mais réouverte en 1976 pour devenir la plus longue correspondance régulière anglaise sur machines à vapeur.

     In the following century, caravans and camping provided the main trade and saved the branch railway. This rural line was closed on 4 January 1971 and reopened on 28 March 1976. It has since brought back a succession of historic locomotives to operate what is now Britain’s longest steam line in regular seasonal service.
